Finally back in print, this collection of Drew Friedman's earliest comic strips and illustrations features his most obsessively stippled black-and-white panels and his most hilarious wise-guy takes on the stars and demi-stars and never-quite-stars of that swamp we like to call showbiz.

It seems like they'd pop up at least once in just about any periodical I was reading in the ss. When this and Warts And All came out, it was inevitable I'd pick Any Resemblance To Persons Living Or Dead Is Purely Coincidental - Screaming Mechanical Brain - In D up. Looking back now, about 20 years later, it's easy to be a little or more than a little offended by the irreverence with which the Friedmans commit their satire.
It's hard now to find the loss of Lou Costello's son as in any way a reasonable point to The Friedmans Oh, What A Night - The Dells - Oh, What A Night / Believe Me another act I got into back in my early comics days.
It's hard now to find the loss of Lou Costello's son as in any way a reasonable point to even mention in a humourous strip. But who cares?! The art's still eye-poppingly lovely yet subtle, and the constant pop-culture references are even more like candy to this geek baby after years more soaking up the sources. This is not a book I'd recommend for the faint at heart or the easily offended Except maybe my friends. Still, it's a wonderfully biting read, and a veritable smorgasbord of pointless references to the forgotten folk of Hollywood and elsewhere.
This book served as my official introduction to the art of Drew Friedman. With my favorite member of the The 3 Stooges Shemp Howard as the book's cover-boy it was impossible for me to pass it by. I still own my original oversized, soft-cover first edition of this book but recently received the newly reissued hardbound edition. If you do not buy a copy of this book tomorrow you are only punishing yourself. This book was a bizarre travel back in time for me, reminding me of the era when I would by and devour "vintage" Mad Magazines from garage sales and early-stage eBay The stippled and collaged artwork is great to look at but maybe because of the Mad This book was a bizarre travel back in time for me, reminding me of the era when I would by and devour "vintage" Mad Magazines from garage sales and early-stage Any Resemblance To Persons Living Or Dead Is Purely Coincidental - Screaming Mechanical Brain - In D The stippled and collaged artwork is great to look at but maybe because of the Mad Magazine I expected this to be zanier than it was.
The best story, for exactly this reason, was the one about Morgan Fairchild as a roommate. Oh the stippling! The pockmarks, the liver spots! Gorgeously detailed caricatures. A strange foray into the realm of mid-level celebrity and decaying fame. The writing is amusing, wistful, and very occasionally a bit mean-spirited, which is a detriment. Overall, though, an entertaining book that gave me curious sensations. Feb 02, Alex Firer rated it really liked it. I love Drew Friedman, but I read so little of his early work!
This is like a Rosetta Stone into so many of Any Resemblance To Persons Living Or Dead Is Purely Coincidental - Screaming Mechanical Brain - In D heroes, from Michael Kupperman borrowing the joy of seeing one note old comedy archetypes spout their stupid lines in a complex world to Bill Griffith lifting the dadaist writing. The raw Jewish gusto worked its way into Dorkin in a way its never been seen before or since!
The gusto of the slightly annoyed Jewish nerd. This has a clear appeal at least to me and I wish more Jews would I love Drew Friedman, but I read so little of his early work! This has a clear appeal at least to me and I wish more Jews would own their basement scented world grumpiness. And who is this Josh Alan Friedman? I have to read more of his work! It's incredible how much better the comics he wrote in his collection are.
I also learned that Matt Besser's grandfather, Joe Besser, was not only one the last Stooge, but he was the guy who said "You do and I'll give you such a I Pray - Ace Of Base - Flowers What a weird legend!
Living vicariously through two legends grandson and The 3 Stooges when they were ending but his hit character Stinky the Man Baby-- uncelebrated! I originally read this 25 years ago and this still holds up! Fantastic speckling art, interesting perspectives of fringe celebrities, it just doesn't get much better than this. And that is the sad part: it never did.
This is much, much better than the stuff they do in Mad magazine today, or stuff like Old Jewish Comedians, it just doesn't compare to their biting, silly fun they gave us in the 80s. Sorry, but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.
Simply hilarious, and one of my favorite comics of all time; the last copy I had was a Penguin trade paperback which fell apart almost immediately after I bought it, so I am glad to see that Fantagraphics has brought it out in a handsome hardcover edition.
