Word got out that the Saturday night appearance of Guiomar Novaes, at Hunter College, was going to be her farewell concert. Late last week the lady denied it. But whether Guiomar Novaes - A Recital Novaes is indeed going to leave the concert stage, or quietly continue, or give annual grand farewell concerts a la Patti, nobody was taking any chances this time.
The hall was sold out. Miss Novaes came out slowly, slim and beautiful. One thought of her past. Not many in the audience could have been at her New York debut, which took place about 55 years ago; but who knows? Miss Novaes has very faithful following. But many remember her well from the 's—the Novaes of the velvet paws, the Desire Boys - DSK - Man And Guitar of indescribable elegance and fluent technique, the Novaes whose body, through her hands, seemed welded to the keyboard.
Nobody, of course, expected that kind of playing. There was, true, a kind of innocent purity to her playing. But her fingers were constantly betraying her, would no longer do what she wanted them to do. It was spooky. Miss Novaes was playing as though detached from reality. Her face showed no expression: she looked neither disturbed nor unhappy. If she could not get the effects she wanted, tant pis!
She went doggedly along. One desperately wanted her to recover—this great artist —but there seemed no Алтай - Дмитрий Маликов - Pianomaniя (DVD) of hope. Then the miracle happened.
The playing was strong and confident, with clear articulation, correct pedaling and a refined feeling for dynamics. There was all but a sigh of relief from the audience. Now Madame was herself, and all would be right. Charm, style, color, intimacy—it was the kind of playing that has made Miss Novaes unique, and it was present in good measure. These days she is not going to take the tempos she, took 30 years ago. Instead she substituted breath of authentic romanticism, slowing up but Guiomar Novaes - A Recital breaking the line when the going got rough.
At the end there were cheers for the gallant lady, and a floral tribute. Miss, Novaes looked moved. The: audience certainly was. She had made a supreme effort in the second half of the recital, and she deserved every cheer. But should she really continue playing? Or should she now bow out with the acclaim ringing in her ears? To one who has loved her playing these many years, there can be but one answer.
This listener could not go through another hour of the kind of playing heard in the first half of the program. His heart could not stand it. At Hunter College Auditorium.
