This band scared the hell out of a lot of Berliners inor so say the liner notes. Most likely the regular folks enjoyed the music while critics made a lot of noise complaining because they didn't like to be serenaded by people of color. Neither did they appreciate the wild arrangements, nor those hot solos delivered by Tommy LadnierGarvin Bushelland Eugene Sedric. Someone over there liked it a lot, however, because Europe has never terminated its love affair with American jazz.
I Can’t Get Started - Cybill Shepherd - Mad About The Boy titles from Julyrecorded in Berlin, show a frantic, hot band anxious to show off its best tricks. There are quotes from popular melodies, some dating back to the previous century, and a whole lot of accelerated exertion, quite modern in its day.
Two versions Sweet Black Blues - Sam Wooding & His Chocolate Dandies* - Sam Wooding & His Chocolate Dandies "Alabamy Bound" illustrate this band's topical novelty abilities. While some jazz purists may wrinkle their noses at these performances, there is no denying their historical importance, and the sheer wonderment one may experience upon surrendering to the sounds of The session from Mayrecorded in Barcelona, packs more of a solid jazz punch.
The rest of the session is devoted to various sweet novelties with hot moments; vocals range from snappy scat to delirious crooning and epiglottal chortling. To close out this fascinating album of rare music, Biograph included a trio version of "I Got Rhythm" recorded in Paris in April A lucky opportunity to hear Wooding 's stride piano under modern recording conditions.
